The Fragile Beauty of Grottole: 550 Ideas to Revive the Ruined Church

The international competition "Reuse the Fallen Church" was an important initiative with a special focus on the fascinating Chiesa Diruta in Grottole (Matera). The competition has shed light on the crucial issue of reusing neglected architectural heritage.

The primary objective was to imagine, within the suggestive remains of the Diruta Church, dating back to the 15th century and never completed due to seismic events and fires, a new cultural space dedicated to music and concerts. The challenge, aimed at architects, engineers and students from all over the world, collected over 550 innovative proposals.

A prestigious international jury evaluated the projects, selecting the most original and pertinent visions. The participants' works were exhibited in the exhibition "La fragile bellezza. Nuove visioni per la Chiesa Diruta", inaugurated in Grottole, traveling among the unused houses of the historic center.

The initiative was part of Wonder Grottole's broader objective of promoting the reinhabitation of the historic center, cultural regeneration and the reactivation of the community fabric, welcoming new energies and skills from outside.

The international jury was composed of: Adam Nathaniel Furman, Emanuele Fidone, Assemble Architects, Diego Hernandez (ArchDaily), Simone Bossi, Graca Correia & Roberto Ragazzi (Correia Ragazzi Arquitectos), Andrea Paoletti (Wonder Grottole), Wenqiang Han (Archstudio), Eric de Broche des Combes (Luxigon), Jaume Mayol & Irene Pérez (TEd’A arquitectes).
